Formosa PVC explosion kills four workers.(accidents at Formosa Plastics' polyvinyl chloride plant)

An explosion and fire at Formosa Plastics' polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plant at Illiopolis, IL on April 23 killed four employees and injured four others. Two of the injured employees remain in critical but stable condition, the company says. The fire started at a 200-million lbs/year PVC unit at the site producing specialty grade PVC, Formosa says. The Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board (CSB; Washington) says the incident is "among the most serious" in the six years it has existed.

The damage to the plant is "serious" but not as extensive as initial reports ...
