Unfortunately, as someone who took out student loans to pay for my law school education, I am not sympathetic to James Lockhart, whom the U.S. Supreme Court recently ruled against, holding that the government could garnishee his Social Security payments to pay for (very) old student loans (Thursday P-I).

At the bottom of every student-loan application is a notation that 1 percent will be withheld to be used as insurance in the event the applicant dies or becomes disabled...
