May 10--KARLSTAD, Minn. -- When the hospital here shut down in 1995, the closing ceremony included residents walking around the building while holding lighted black candles.
"It was a black day in Karlstad," said Lori Bothum, local resident and managing editor of the North Star News.
The darkest part was losing the 20 jobs provided by the hospital.
But there was other residual damage.
