YESTERDAY was the centenary of the death of Eadweard Muybridge, photographer, inventor, murderer, and the man who did more than any other to change the way horseracing is perceived.

Muybridge, though not a racing man at all, was an English-born photographer whose experiments in California in the 1870s made him the first to reveal in detail the gait of a galloping horse, thus exposing the mistakes in centuries of equine paintings.
