Petroleum coke is a black solid or powder produced in delayed coking units. It can be classified by structure and appearance into needle coke, sponge coke and pellet coke.

With the increase of heavy crude oil varieties, the shrinkage of heavy fuel oil markets and the more stringent environmental protection requirements on gasoline and diesel quality, coking has become an important residuum processing means and more and more petroleum coke has been put on the market.
