Structured Query Language (SQL) remains the commonly accepted method of cross-data base access despite alternatives such as data dictionaries offered by some vendors. Much of SQL's success is attributable to Tandem Computer Corp's SQL Access Group, which now has 42 vendors as its members. In general, vendors offer one of two types of SQL gateways; the intelligent gateway, which has software on both the receiving and transmitting ends, and the 'passing-through' gateway which includes a module on only the transmitting end.
