Language out of bounds: ultimately, poetry defines the reason most educators are in the field. After all, it is poetry to see a child suddenly read a book by herself.

Who needs poetry, anyway? How about the teachers and administrators who attend in-service workshops with me, the poet? Their bodies may be before me but their minds take a little while to catch up. Those very active minds are still back in their classrooms and offices thinking about their day: "Why did Pablo have that sulky look on his face all morning? I'll keep an eye on him. Maybe his father's drinking again." Or "Ivonne aced that math test; I'm so proud of her!" Or "I've got this budget to balance and that budget to balance. Why do I feel like I'm standing on my head?"
