COMMISSION QUESTIONED ON FLUORINE IN DRINKING WATER.

The European Commission has been asked by an MEP whether Directive 98/83/EC on drinking water continues to allow the addition in drinking water of a "priority hazardous substance" banned under the Framework Water Directive (2000/60/EC). The substance in question is hexafluorosilicic acid. British Socialist MEP Brian Simpson, who penned the written question, believes the Commission is "in clear breach of its own Directives", in particular the ban on Member States adopting measures that result in "any increase in the pollution of water used in the production of drinking water".
