IT was meant to be a welcome return, not a tragic farewell, for Persian Punch at

Ascot yesterday.

His death following a suspected heart-attack in the closing stages of the Sagaro Stakes cast a shadow over not just the rest of the afternoon, but, one suspects, the rest of the season and beyond.

Known for running his heart out metaphorically, it was all too painful that he did it literally on this occasion. The tragedy - and there is surely no

other word more suitable - sent the
