Monorails could benefit cash-strapped cities: the Indonesian capital Jakarta is planning to build a two-line monorail to help to solve its chronic road traffic congestion problems.(Light Rapid Transit: Jakarta)

JAKARTA has a population of 12 million, and the Jabotabek area consisting of Jakarta, Bogor, Tangerang, and Bekasi is home to 17 million people. The area is served by a commuter rail network. A metro has been planned for many years, but has always proved too expensive to build. Governor Sutiyoso of Jakarta now favours a monorail, which is relatively quick and cheap to build.
