Farmers operate cooperatives to increase their financial returns in two ways: through economies of scale in supply co-ops' purchases of large lots of agricultural inputs, and through co-ops' ability to compete with private firms in selling farm output.
Dairy products and grain are the major commodities marketed by Kentucky agricultural cooperatives, which also handle some fruits, vegetables and livestock.
The Burley Tobacco Growers Cooperative Association is a specialized co-op that markets "pool" burley tobacco.
