Richard Valeriani was clubbed by a white segregationist while reporting on a civil rights demonstration in Marion, Ala.

Ernest Withers was beaten and arrested by a police officer in Jackson, Miss., while photographing the funeral of a civil rights activist.

And veteran journalist John Seigenthaler was attacked in Montgomery, Ala., by a mob of Ku Klux Klansmen.

They are three of the 19 journalists who covered the beginnings of the civil rights movement and will be at Syracuse University this weekend for a two-day symposium. The ...
