It used to be _ back in the Dark Ages of the late 1980s _ that removing a kidney meant major surgery. An 18-inch incision. Carving through muscle. Removing part of a rib. A week or more in the hospital. Lingering pain. And two to three months worth of recovery.

Now? Three half-inch incisions. One to two days in the hospital. Recovery within two to four weeks.

From spleens to spines, from hernias to hysterectomies to heartburn, minimally invasive surgeries are replacing the long, thick scars of traditional operations, using smaller incisions, ...
