The Southern Cone Common Market (MERCOSUR) and the Comunidad Andina de Naciones (CAN) have joined in a trade agreement, bringing ten countries and 350 million people into a common market. The move signals increased economic integration in the South American region and an accelerating effort to strengthen the region's ability to negotiate with the US and European Union (EU). This will create a free-trade zone encompassing more than 5% of the world's population.
