High insurance rates put fishermen in jeopardy: association plans to fight recent increases.(Canada)

Skyrocketing insurance rates for property and vehicle owners in Atlantic Canada have also hit fishermen and sealers hard.

"Insurance rates for fishing vessels in Newfoundland and Labrador have gone right through the roof," says Earle McCurdy, president of the Fish, Food and Allied Workers. "Many fishermen are risking everything they've built up over a lifetime by fishing without insurance because they simply can't afford the premiums."
