Inspired by the Wright brothers, Donald Douglas built a host historic airplanes, founded what was to become the McDonnell Douglas Corp., and played and important role in both the jet age and the space program.

Donald W. Douglas, a brilliant aeronautical engineer and pioneering aerospace industrialist, made many important contributions to aviation. He built the DC-3, one of the world's all-time great aircraft. In the 1920s, he founded the Douglas Aircraft Co. (The firm merged with the McDonnell Aircraft Corp. in 1967 to become the McDonnell Douglas Corp.)
