Homicide: Life on the Street: progress in portrayals of African American men.(Shades of Black on)

Journal of Popular Film & Television | March 22, 2004| | Copyright

Abstract: Although scholars endorse Frank's Place as a model of televised black culture, that series lasted only one season--not enough to explore the varied characteristics of African Americans. Homicide: Life on the Street, largely ignored in the literature, survived seven seasons and gave black actors freedom to develop a richer portrait of differences that define African American men.

Key words: African Americans and compassion, African Americans and religion, African American men, black-white interactions, Frank's place, Homicide: Life on the Street, skin color
