Trade Associations in Troubled Times

Is there a place for trade associations in today's marketplace or do they just get in the way of direct communications between large buyers and sellers? It's a question on some people's minds these days. It must be frustrating to the heads of some large manufacturing companies, wholesale organizations and major retail chains to deal with and through their respective associations when they are used to the efficiency that comes with direct authority.
