The Cobol programming language is strongly entrenched in the commercial world despite criticism that is is not a flexible language. There are nearly 80 billion lines of Cobol code in existence, and there are nearly 3 million Cobol programmers. User organizations devoted to the advancement and maintenance of Cobol seek to update the programming language so that it stays current with new technologies.
