Aromatic compounds containing both electron donor and acceptor substituents are highly polar and their UV spectra can be sensitive to solvent polarity and hydrogen bonding. The UV-visible absorption spectra of p-N,N-dimethylaminocinnamonitrile in many solvents of varying polarity and hydrogen bonding ability are presented.
