Yes, Virginia, there is a difference between sweet potatoes and yams.

Sweet potatoes, native to Central America, are sweeter and starchier than yams and are a staple in many Asian and Latin American countries.

Yams, on the other hand, are a staple food in South America and the West Indies. They tend to be slippery when cut and stringy when cooked.

Most of us limit our sweet potato eating to the Thanksgiving holiday, when the naturally sweet tuber is camouflaged by brown sugar, marshmallows and butter.
