In recent years, chorionic villus sampling has been developed as an alternative to aminiocentesis for the prenatal diagnosis of various genetic and cytogenetic disorders. Chorionic villus sampling has the advantage of allowing diagnosis in the first trimester of pregnancy; diagnosis by amnniocentesis is usually not possible until the second trimester. Amniocentesis has a high diagnostic accuracy and is regarded to be relatively safe (with the risk of subsequent miscarriage about 1 percent).
