We tend to associate cotton mills -the dark, Satanic variety of William Blake's poem -with the north of England. That indeed is where they predominated, but the geography of industrialisation could easily have been very different.

There were plenty of attempts to convert Staffordshire into a county of millworkers too. Had it come off, it would have created a very different landscape around the towns to the north of Tamworth.
