In a month, deep below the Fulton Falls lock, valves 6 feet wide and 8 feet tall will rise, unleashing 2.7 million gallons of water in about 20 minutes.
Gates 50 feet high, weighing a ton for every foot, will open, and boats plying the Oswego Canal will be lifted or lowered toward their destinations.
The opening day of the canal season wouldn't be so smooth, however, if it weren't for the work that has been done this past winter in the bowels of the lock, often in temperatures below freezing.
