AT ten to nine a berobed gatekeeper, flanked by two guards, appears before the locked Houshin-mon gate bearing an ukejo handheld gong. A brief, resounding metallic flourish later and Shuri-jo castle is open to the public.

Passing through the gate, the visitor can only gasp in wonder at the sight that greets him: the broad red and white stripes of the forecourt, the sweeping shimmer of red and white roof tiles, bright broad strokes of vermilion and gold all around are set off against the dazzling blue Okinawan sky.
