Mar. 27--Rice that has been genetically engineered to produce pharmaceutical ingredients could be grown in San Diego and eight other Southern California counties under a proposal expected to gain regulatory approval Monday.
It would be a first for biotechnology and agriculture in California. And it's a first that a collection of farmers, environmentalists and whole-food advocates want to prevent for fear it will contaminate other rice crops and the consumer food supply.
