OCEANFRONT -- Virginia Beach author William O. Foss is riveted by the account of a ship that foundered off the Virginia Beach coast more than 100 years ago - and is still remembered annually during a commemorative ceremony at the Oceanfront.

"This really, as shipwrecks go, was not a big shipwreck,'' Foss said of the Norwegian bark Dictator's fate.

The stranded hulk of the ship was pounded into huge scraps of driftwood by mountainous breakers 350 yards off the coast on March 27, 1891.
