Crusted, or Norwegian, scabies are rare but highly contagious. Patients with cognitive deficiencies and those with deficient immune systems (due to illness or immunosuppressive therapies) are particularly at risk of developing this infection in which the skin literally becomes infested with thousands to millions of tiny mites. Typically, the skin on the palms and soles of the feet are crusted. This can easily be diagnosed incorrectly as generalized dermatitis (inflammation of the skin).
