In November 2003, the oil ministry gave Veritas DGC, a UK unit of Veritas of the US, a licence to survey a prospective 4,700 sq km area offshore. The contract calls for seismic, geophysical and geological studies. Veritas will share with Damascus the revenues from the sale of the data gathered.

For international surveying companies had bid for the licence. The others were Thales Geosolutions of the UK, InSeis Terra of Norway, and Geotechni-cal Services of Canada.
