FOUNDER of the eponymous shogunate, Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616) was a man of extraordinary patience, just as he was one of extraordinary ambition. Though becoming sole ruler of Japan had long been for him the most glittering of prizes, he waited patiently until his 60th year before finally grasping supreme power.
