Prescription drugs have long been available for the treatment of obesity. While shown to be useful in helping people lose weight, they do not generate much enthusiasm. Invariably, the weight is regained as soon as people stop the drug, which is prescribed only for short-term usage (a few weeks) as an adjunct to a restrictive diet.

In an editorial for Annals of Internal Medicine, George A. Bray, M.D. of Pennington Biomedical Research Center, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, called for a revised way of thinking--not only about the drugs but also about obesity itself (15 July 1991). ...
