The Greek inventor Ctesibius began his adult life as a barber but that career got pushed aside quickly as his fascination with mechanics began to consume him. One of his earliest inventions was a counter-weighted mirror that could be adjusted to accommodate the differing heights of his customers. He housed the lead weight inside a tube, and when the weight ran down in the tube, he noticed the whistling sound made as air was forced out the end.
