SIR PATRICK GEDDES is remembered today chiefly as master to the young Lewis Mumford. He was Mumford's "Jovian father ... [a man] stern and practically omniscient." They met for the first time in 1917 and remained friends until Geddes's death in 1932. "I am an abject admirer of everything he has said and done," wrote Mumford with characteristic passion. Mumford so worshiped him that he named his first son after Geddes: not "Patrick," of course, but "Geddes."
