Commission steps.

The European Commission is looking to apply the EU's banana regime to the new Member States by raising the EU's current import volumes, without introducing any other changes to the present quota system (see inset). The scale of this increase is still to be decided. The additional volume will be based on historical imports to the new EU Member States, and will be subject to negotiations with the EU's trading partners in the World Trade Organisation (WTO).
