THE artist Thomas Jones (1742-1803) was unhappy when in his fifties he wrote in his Memoirs, 'the prospect of Employment in my Profession was dark and gloomy'. At twenty-six, he had already surmised, 'throughout almost every Occurrence in life, it has ever been my misfortune to be "as one born out of due Time"'. Fulfilling his prophecy, he is now exalted, 200 years after his death.
