In my early 20s, my French mother-in-law set me straight about soup. Traditional French onion soup can cure a stomachache or a stuffy nose. Smothered with melted cheese gratineed golden over toasted slabs of French bread, soupe a l'oignon gratinee remedies winter woes. Spoons oozing with Gruyere, steaming with stock and caramelized onion turn melancholy to mirth.
