ENGLAND A suffered an improbable and embarrassing defeat as an unbeaten double-century from Venugopal Rao carried South Zone past a target of 501 to prevail by six wickets in Gurgaon,India yesterday.
An attack led by England Test call-up Simon Jones proved powerless to stop the hosts'last-day surge as South Zone ploughed on from a start-of-play 171-2 to record the fourth-highest last-innings total of all time.
Rao plundered an unbeaten 228, to add to centuries from Sridharam Sriram (117) and then Subramaniam Badrinath (100no) in the Duleep Trophy match.
