The Great Dismal Swamp, a former sanctuary for runaway slaves seeking freedom, was officially recognized Friday as a part of the National Underground Railroad Network.
More than 300 people attended a luncheon and recognition ceremony at the Chesapeake Conference Center. The event served to highlight and celebrate the role the swamp played in the lives of the enslaved.
