INTRODUCTION

Contractile activation in muscle is initiated by a massive efflux of [Ca.sup.2+] ions from the SR. This [Ca.sup.2+] flux is tightly controlled by the plasma membrane voltage (Melzer et al., 1995; Dirksen, 2002; see Fig. 2 A). In experiments on isolated muscle cells, SR [Ca.sup.2+] release can be reproducibly triggered by plasma membrane depolarization.
