An OWLS (One Way Low Speed) crossing diamond has been installed at the crossing of the Union Pacific Chicago-St. Louis line and the Toledo, Peoria and Western at Chenoa, Ill. This UP line also carries six Amtrak trains a day and is the corridor for the Positive Train Control pilot project. This line is being upgraded for 110-mph passenger trains in some areas, and UP was asked to develop a crossing frog that would allow passenger train speeds of up to 90 mph.

Railway Track and Structures ; The use of flange bearing in the design and operation of crossing diamonds is proceeding in the North American freight system, but not in the form originally expected. Instead of full-flange-bearing frog, FBF, crossing diamonds, One Way-Low Speed, OWLS, flange-bearing frog crossing diamonds are

Railway Track and Structures ; CSX Transportation has now operated 20 mgt over the flange bearing frog crossing diamond at Shelby, Ohio, at an allowable top speed of 40 mph. These first 20 mgt of operations have been successful with minimal maintenance required and no operating problems. The FBF diamond, installed July 31, 2006,
FLANGE BEARING.
Industrial Maintenance & Plant Operation ; A new flange bearing has been added to the igubal(R) line of self-aligning bearings. The two-bolt flange bearing is constructed of an glide(R) L280 inner race and an igumid G housing. This combination provides high abrasion- and impact-resistance, offering a durable and lightweight alternative to

Railway Age ; One of the essential and unique features of railroads is that they use self-guided vehicles. This is achieved by the use of a flanged wheel. The wheel flanges must be accommodate when vehicles change from one track to another (turnouts) or cross another track (crossing diamonds--Figure 12). This

Special trackwork by design: manufacturers of turnouts, crossing diamonds and other special trackwork are finding ways to make stronger and more-cost-effective products.
Railway Track and Structures ; Special trackwork such as turnouts and diamonds are designed to deal with the hard environment on the railroad, but maintaining them can be costly. According to TTCI, the industry spends $900 million per year on special trackwork. Frogs consume $400 million, $300 million is spent on bonded
