A Porcupine "Hangs Around"
On a birding adventure in the William C. Whitney Wilderness Area last December, a peculiar sight caught my attention. Why was there a large "nest" way out on such a thin limb? Further inspection aided by binoculars revealed not a nest, but quills! A porcupine was "out on a limb" about 30 feet up in a magnificent hemlock tree.
I climbed over the large snow bank and pushed through small spruce/fir trees to arrive under the animal. It was completely balled up and still. Curiously, I saw no porcupine tracks in the deep snow around ...
