The Dolomites are a southern part of the eastern Alps. The main part of this mountain range consists of Dolomite, a limestone with a certain concentration of magnesia, that was originally defined by the French scientist Dolomieu (1750-1801). This is the origin of the name Dolomites.
Rugged and bizarre rock formations have formed throughout this region, of which the city of Cortina d' Ampezzo is the center. Here is also the starting point of many tours into the mountains.
