In our beginnings are not always our ends. The subject of this article died exactly 200 years ago this month.

He happily embraced his finale in the little cot-bed he habitually slept in beside his books in his library; outside the window the River Susquehanna flowed down from the Great Lakes towards Chesapeake Bay, and the Pennsylvania air blew cold and free.

It was certainly a far cry from life in Birmingham.
