I argue here that the federal government is not obligated to pay reparations for the injury slavery caused because: (1) it did not cause the damage; (2) if it did (by failing to abolish slavery), it does not owe compensation. In the course of presenting my argument, I note in passing that if the federal government were obligated to pay reparations for slavery, its obligation would extend to only a fraction of the damages.
