The earliest surviving anatomical drawings by Leonardo da Vinci have been dated to about 1487 and show the master's interest in the nervous system, in the skeleton and in the myology of the upper and lower extremities and of the head and neck. On the basis of these earliest studies in human anatomy it has been concluded that, in addition to surface examination and received wisdom, Leonardo's knowledge of the subject was based on animal dissections.
