The ruined city of Great Zimbabwe is a breathtaking site. With stone walls more than three stories high and between 4 and 17 feet thick, the ruins cover an area of two and one-half miles. A center of trade from about 1100 to 1500, the site once supported a population between 10,000 and 20,000 and served as the residence of the area's most powerful ruler. Located in southeastern Zimbabwe, early settlers probably selected the site because of its abundance of grazing and fertile land, proximity to gold and salt mines, and good supply of timber.
