THE first barnacle geese of the year were sitting on the shore, or lazily swimming just off-shore. Well, they were the first for me this year, although other people have told me of seeing many of them both on the shore and inland These are birds of our north coast, the west coast of Ireland is their most popular place here, and some birds turn up on the east coast. These were east coast birds, and they had arrived here from north-east Greenland for the winter.
