Some years ago I was the proud owner of a new 1.8-litre Mercedes-Benz 190E. But much as I loved the car, even I had to admit that when it came to performance it was found wanting.

The body was just too heavy for the engine size.

So when I took delivery of an E200 Kompressor - a car with a much larger body but still with a 1.8-litre engine - I feared the same thing would apply.

Thankfully I was totally wrong.
