* Atlantic City was once a wooded island inhabited by Lenni Lanape Indians. The island was first called Absegami, or "little water," which later became Absecon Island. In 1800, the first settler, Jeremiah Leeds, established a year-round home on the island. Approximately 80 years later, Atlantic City began to earn its reputation as the "Queen of Resorts" and "America's Favorite Playground."
