Walking into the new Carvel Ice Cream store in Vero Beach, Fla., is like stepping into the past and future at the same time. Hot-pink chairs with chrome bases, flashes of quilted stainless steel and a rainbow-hued palette hark back to the 1950s, while laminate wood floors, a wide-open white ceiling and tiny lime-green glass lamps set the decor firmly in the 21st century.
